The Fraser Rug Hook
The hook generations of rug hookers have reached for — simple, sturdy, and built to keep working rug after rug. Made in the no-frills New England tradition of the Harry M. Fraser Company and now part of the HoneyBee Hive family, our rug hook sets a strong steel shank firmly into a comfortable turned-wood handle. The size is stamped right on the handle, so you'll always know which hook is in your hand.
The rule is simple: the larger the number, the finer the hook. Match your hook to the wool cut you're working, using Fraser's own long-standing guidance:
Choose your size
-
#2 · Primitive — for wide, primitive strips (#6 cut and up)
-
#3 · Medium — for strips cut on a #4, #5, or #6 cutter head
-
#4 · Medium-Fine — for medium strips, a #4 cut (1/8″ wide)
-
#6 · Fine — for medium to fine strips, a #3–#4 cut (3/32″ to 1/8″ wide)
-
#8 · Extra-Fine — for fine strips, a #2–#3 cut (2/32″ to 3/32″ wide)
The details
- Turned wooden handle, 2¾″ (7 cm) long
- Steel shank, hook size stamped on the handle
- A thicker shank (lower numbers) opens the backing so wide strips pull through easily; a finer shank (higher numbers) suits narrow-cut detail work
New to hooking? Most beginners start with wider wool cuts, which pull through most easily — pair them with a #2 Primitive or #3 Medium hook and you're ready to start hooking!
